The Tappwater Reverse Osmosis Benchtop Water Filter removes 99% of PFAS, more than 99% of fluoride, and 100% of lead, microplastics and bacteria from Australian tap water. It is one of the only water filters sold in Australia that publishes its full independent lab results, tested by Equinox Labs and Laboratorio Echevarne.

It needs no plumber and no installation. Fill the 3.2L tank with tap water and seven filtration stages, built around a reverse osmosis membrane with 0.0001 micron pores, purify it into the front jug. It plugs into a normal power point, which makes it the practical choice for renters and apartments where under-sink systems are not an option.

It also replaces the kettle. Choose room temperature for drinking, 85°C for preparing baby formula, or up to 95°C for tea and coffee, in preset volumes of 150mL, 300mL or 1L. Press once and walk away.

We thought long and hard about this one. No one hates microplastics more than the people who built a machine to remove them, so here is the honest answer on materials.

There is no such thing as a plastic-free water purifier. The reverse osmosis membrane itself is a polymer, and even "plastic-free" kettles run water past polymer seals. The real question is which materials touch your water. We chose the safest available: premium PEX piping, 100% bisphenol-free (BPA, BPS and BPF) and rated for high temperatures, the same pipe technology used in premium plumbing worldwide. Equinox Labs fed the machine water carrying 0.85 mg/L of fluoride, about what comes out of a fluoridated Australian tap. The water that came out measured below 0.01 mg/L, less than the lab's equipment can detect. Fluoride is a dissolved ion, far too small for carbon filters to catch. What contaminants does it remove?
The short answer: almost everything you don't want. The membrane inside this filter has pores so small (0.0001 microns) that most contaminants physically can't get through. In independent lab testing: PFAS ("forever chemicals"): 99% removed. Fluoride: over 99% removed. Lead: 100% removed, undetectable after filtration. Mercury: 100% removed. Chlorine: over 99.9% removed. E. coli and bacteria: 100% removed. We tested for over 80 contaminants. What are the 7 stages inside the cartridge?

Seven, in one cartridge. Stage 1 is a fabric pre-filter that catches rust, sediment and particles down to 5 microns. Stage 2 is activated carbon fibre, which adsorbs chlorine, VOCs and pesticides. Stage 3 is a scale inhibitor that stops calcium and magnesium crystallising, protecting the membrane. Stage 4 is a second fabric layer that catches any loose carbon. Stage 5 is the heart: a reverse osmosis membrane with 0.0001 micron pores that physically excludes fluoride, PFAS, lead and bacteria. Stage 6 is a final carbon polish for taste. Stage 7 is Swedish Mineral Rock, which adds calcium, magnesium and potassium back so the water drinks like mineral water, not distilled. One swap a year covers all seven.

Does it strip out healthy minerals from the water?
Here's the thing: reverse osmosis is too good at its job. The membrane is so fine it removes almost everything: the bad stuff (lead, PFAS, fluoride) and the good stuff (calcium, magnesium, potassium). That's why some people say RO water tastes "flat" or "empty." So we added a final stage. After purification, your water passes through our Swedish Mineral Rock™, a natural mineral layer that puts the good stuff back in. Is it safe for babies and pets?
Yes, it's some of the cleanest water you can get at home. The filter removes 100% of bacteria, 100% of lead and mercury, and over 99% of fluoride and PFAS. What's left is pure water with minerals added back in: calcium, magnesium, and potassium. For babies, Australian guidelines recommend preparing formula with water that's at least 70°C. Use the 85°C setting, mix, then cool the bottle to feeding temperature. No kettle needed. For pets, same deal: clean, safe water without the chlorine taste they often refuse.

Do I need tools or plumbing to set it up?
No. None. Take it out of the box, put it on your bench, fill the tank, plug it in. That's it. There's no connection to your tap, no drilling, no plumber. It's completely self-contained: the water goes in the back, gets filtered, comes out the front. If you can use a kettle, you can use this.
Will it fit on my benchtop?
It's about the size of a coffee machine. 30 cm high, 22 cm wide, 35 cm deep. Fits under most overhead cabinets and leaves room for your kettle (which you probably won't need anymore).
Can I customise the temperature and amount?
Yes: six temperature presets from 25°C to 95°C, and three volume settings: 150ml, 300ml, or 1 litre. Select what you want, press pour, and walk away. It stops automatically, no overflow, no watching the glass. For room temperature water, skip the temp setting. Cold drinking water, warm for baby formula, near-boiling for coffee or tea. No kettle, no guesswork.
Can I remove the water jug?
Yes, the pure water jug lifts right out. Fill it up, then store it in the fridge or serve it at the table like a pitcher. You don't have to use the dispenser every time.
How fast does it dispense water?
Up to 12 litres per hour. That's more than enough for drinking, cooking, coffee, and refilling water bottles throughout the day, even for a busy household. It's compact, but it keeps up.
How much water does it waste?
Reverse osmosis works by pushing water through a very fine membrane. The pure water passes through; the contaminants stay behind in the source tank. This system runs at a 3:1 ratio: for every 3 litres of clean water, about 1 litre of concentrate builds up. That's more efficient than many RO systems, which run at 2:1 or even 1:1. But nothing goes down the drain. You just keep refilling and filtering. Over time, contaminants concentrate at the bottom. When it's time to empty, the system prompts you: tip out the dregs, refill with fresh water, and keep going. No plumbing. No wasted water running down the sink.
How much electricity does it use?
About the same as a kettle: 2150W when heating water. When you're dispensing cold or room temperature water, it uses far less. In standby, barely anything. If you're replacing a kettle for your tea and coffee, you're not adding to your electricity bill. You're just moving it from one appliance to another.
How long does the filter cartridge last?
Up to 12 months, depending on how much you use it. The cartridge is rated for 1,200 litres. For a two-person household drinking around 2 litres each per day, that's roughly a year. Bigger household or heavier use? You'll replace it sooner. The system tracks usage and tells you when it's time. No guessing. Replacement is simple: swap the cartridge, no tools needed.
