Why chlorine matters more in the shower than the tap.

You drink ~2 litres of water a day. You shower in 40+ litres β€” and 100% of it touches skin and lungs. Heat opens pores. Steam carries chlorine deep into the respiratory tract. Per litre, chlorine exposure in the shower is comparable to drinking the same water.

Stage 1 of every ShowerPro filter is KDF-55, a copper-zinc media originally engineered by Clack Corporation in Wisconsin. KDF is the only filtration technology independently proven for hot, high-pressure water β€” exactly the conditions of a shower. Stage 2 is Calcium Sulfite, which neutralises whatever KDF didn't catch.

When chlorine reacts with organic matter in the pipes, it produces Trihalomethanes (THMs) and other volatile organic compounds. Hot showers turn these into vapour you inhale. ShowerPro removes 95%+ of by-products β€” tested across 32 known VOCs.

Why shower vapour matters more than tap water.

THMs and other VOCs are volatile β€” they evaporate easily at room temperature, and even faster in steam. The CDC estimates that for showers, dermal absorption + inhalation can deliver 2–10Γ— the dose you'd get from drinking the same water.

Long-term THM exposure has been associated with elevated bladder cancer risk in epidemiological studies. The IARC classifies several chlorination by-products as Group 2B (possibly carcinogenic to humans).

This isn't theoretical. Australian mains water averages 30–80 Β΅g/L of THMs β€” within drinking-water guidelines, but a measurable inhalation dose every shower. ShowerPro removes the bulk of it before the steam rises.

Mains water leaves the treatment plant clean. But it travels through kilometres of pipe β€” some over a century old in inner Sydney and Melbourne. Lead solder, brass fittings, galvanised iron, zinc plating all leach into the water that reaches your shower. ShowerPro removes 80%+ of heavy metals via redox reaction in Stage 1 KDF-55.

Why KDF-55 catches what carbon misses.

Plain activated carbon barely touches dissolved metals. KDF-55 works by a completely different mechanism β€” redox. Copper and zinc atoms in the media exchange electrons with dissolved metal ions, binding them to the surface of the media instead of letting them pass through.

The same KDF-55 process also kills bacteria that can grow inside damp filter media β€” which is why ShowerPro doesn't need refrigeration or anti-microbial treatment between showers.

Lead is the one to watch. Any pre-1980s plumbing (including most Sydney and Melbourne inner-city homes) can contain lead solder. There's no safe level of lead exposure. ShowerPro is the simplest way to reduce dermal exposure in older properties.

Why carbon catches what reverse osmosis sometimes misses.

Many pesticide and herbicide molecules are too small to be filtered by size alone β€” they slip through micropore membranes. But they're highly attracted to activated carbon's enormous internal surface area (over 1,000 mΒ² per gram). The molecules stick.

The shower head, the glass, the tiles β€” the white crust that takes 20 minutes a week to scrub off is calcium carbonate crystallising as the water dries. Why this isn't a water softener β€” and why that's fine.

True water softeners use ion exchange to swap calcium and magnesium for sodium. They're effective, but they make your water salty, they need refilling, they cost thousands, and they require plumbing changes. They also strip healthy minerals.

ShowerPro takes a different approach: leave the minerals in the water but prevent them from sticking to surfaces. The proprietary Stage 4 inhibitor chemically interrupts the crystallisation that turns dissolved calcium into solid scale. The water still has the same hardness reading β€” it just doesn't leave a deposit.
